Production Research

Production research is the research of cost for crew and Equipment, For example how much a  popular director would be for your film and location scouts that find suitable locations for you to film. This research covers everything expinditure wise  from Cameras and lighting to Editors and Cast. it can use both Primary and Secondary Research to be carried out

Market Research

Market Research is the collection and analysis of information about the market within which a particular product will compete with other products for an audience and revenue. For example if someone produces a product with the main demographic of teenagers they will do research into other products targeted at this demographic  to see what the competetion is. or if you wanted to open a music shop in a particular part of a Town or city  you will do research into that area and find out if there is any competition and then research into how much of a competition they would be to see if you have a chance of gaining revenue. A disadvantage of this is the researcher interprets the research according to his or her own biased view/opinion.

Audience Research

Audience Research is the collection and analysis of information about the target audience for a particular media product or sector of the media industry.  If you were going to produce a tv show for our age group (13-18) you would have to find out what kind of genre is the most  popular amongst our age group, to do this you would have to do some primary research, for example sending out questionnaires or  conducting Vox pops . You would also have to do some secondary research like searching on the internet for  the most popular tv programmes at the moment for teenagers. You will also need to find out who their favorite actors/actress are and their gender/ethnic group to see if it changes their opinions.you will Also need to find out the time when they usally watch tv so you can air the show at an appropriate time for maximum views because there's no point airing a tv programme on aimed at teenagers  at 1pm on a weekday because most teenagers will be at school/college then.

Secondary Research

Secondary Research is where you use exsisting information that has already been gathered by  people or organasations using the internet, books, cd's, or magazines, RAJAR.com is an example of secondary research. An easy way to gather secondary research is if its split into different sections such as age groups and gender. This is a much easier and quicker way to find out information you are looking for. An advantage of secondary research is its easy to  collect and less time consuming than primary research but a disadvantage is you dont always know for certain if the sources used are credible and what you are using is true.

primary research

Primary Research is original research to obtain new information using such techniques as interviews, questionnaires, surveys, or Vox pops.  Alot of people in the media industry use this method of research for example, journalists when they're interviewing people for a magazine or newspaper. An advantage of primary research is you can research exactly what you want,  and don't have to rely on other peoples sources, also  The research will be accurate for the current time / place / situation you are studying. a disadvantage of primary research is that it can be a lot harder and more time consuming to conduct.

Quantitative research

Quantitative research is the research of numbers and Measureable Facts usually about the numbers of Viewers that watch a tv show. Quantitative research is often a lot easier to analyze than qualitative research and sometimes easier to conduct. the products of this research are usually Viewing figures, Circulation and Ratings. it can use both Primary and secondary research techniques to be carried out. A Disadvantage is the development of standard questions by researchers can lead to structual bias and false representation.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is in depth research into The opinions and attitudes of an audience in regards to a specific product or tv show or film. this is the opposite of quantative research which is just the numbers and measureable facts side of things. There are many ways to carry out this research and it is a vital part of research within the media industry because it allows people to give feedback and share their opinions and it allows the company to regard the feedback and change the product or whatever accordingly. The ways that qualitative research is carried out is usually in questionnaires or surveys because they are easier to set up than focus groups, a quick simple way to gather opinion information that is easy to analyse.
